'The Tree Of Life' And Kirsten Dunst Among Winners Of The 2011 Cannes Film Festival

Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" opene
d at Cannes to a mixed chorus of cheers and boos, but there's no split decision here
.

The Cannes Film Festival jury, headed up by Robert De Niro, has
awarded the highly coveted Palme d'Or to "Tree of Life," bestowing Malick's most recent effort with the festival's top prize a full year after it
was supposed to appear in competition. The result is a bit of a surprise, as many spectators identified the buzzworthy "We Need to Talk about Kevin" and "The Artist" as top contenders for the prize.

See who else emerged victorious at Cannes past the jump!

- Despite the controversy surrounding Lars Von Trier, you can't say the man can't lead his actors to greatness. Kirsten Dunst won the Best Actress award for her work in Von Trier's "Melancholia," another divisive film made all the more controversial by the director's remarks made earlier last week.

- Nicolas Winding Refn won Best Director for his work on "Drive," the car-chase suspense thriller starring Ryan Gosling as a getaway driver who suffers a change of heart. Fans of Refn and Gosling's collaboration will be pleased to know that the two are teaming together again for "Logan's Run" in the fall.

- Proving that a picture (and a performance) is truly worth a thousand words, "The Artist" star Jean Dujardin walked away from Cannes with the Best Actor award for his portrayal of a struggling silent film star. Though some are disappointed that "The Artist" didn't win the Palme d'Or, Dujardin's victory is a nice and well-earned consolation prize.

- Other winners include "Footnote" writer Joseph Cedar for Best Screenplay and a tie between "Kid with a Bike" and "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" for runner-up.
